In ProgressGonzalez Shah Smith provided MEP/FP engineering services for the adaptive reuse of the former Sears building at Hancock Center into Central Health Hancock, a new clinical and administrative hub for Travis County's public hospital district.
The nearly 200,000-square-foot facility brings health care services and administrative functions together under one roof. The first floor includes space for primary and specialty care, dental services, diagnostic laboratories, imaging, pharmacy services, and training, while the second floor provides administrative offices, collaboration areas, meeting rooms, an auditorium, and employee support spaces. Central Health also plans to consolidate offices for Central Health, CommUnityCare Health Centers, and Sendero Health Plans within the facility.
The project transforms a former department store into a modern health care environment designed to improve access, streamline operations, and strengthen coordination across the Central Health system. The adaptive reuse approach preserves the building's existing concrete structure while introducing natural light, updated interiors, and flexible spaces for both patient care and workplace functions.
Central Health Hancock began welcoming patients in April 2026 and continues to expand services throughout the year. As additional clinical and administrative functions move into the facility, the project will support a more integrated and community-focused model of care for Travis County residents.
