In Progress | Jan. 2028Gonzalez Shah Smith provided MEP/FP engineering services for the new Clinical Services Building at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
The 11-story, 760,000-square-foot facility includes clinical support departments, laboratories, a compounding pharmacy, locker rooms, an education and simulation center, and workplace environments throughout the building. New pedestrian bridges connect the Clinical Services Building with the existing hospital campus and the Zayed Building, strengthening connections across the medical campus.
The building was designed not only to support its current operations, but also to provide mechanical and utility capacity for a future adjacent 1.8-million-square-foot bed tower. Energy-efficient systems include heat recovery chillers providing 500 tons of simultaneous heating and cooling, energy recovery air-handling units serving approximately 300,000 CFM, and desiccant dehumidification systems supporting the compounding pharmacy.
Electrical infrastructure includes dual 15 MVA utility feeds for redundancy, six 2,500 kVA emergency generators, and dedicated UPS systems supporting critical IT, building automation, and pathology laboratory equipment. The project also consolidates major campus infrastructure, including 150,000 gallons of diesel fuel storage, domestic and fire water storage, and an expanded medical gas tank farm serving the existing campus, the Clinical Services Building, and future development.
Together, these systems position the Clinical Services Building as a critical piece of MD Anderson's expanding campus infrastructure, supporting current clinical operations while preparing for significant future growth.
