Gonzalez Shah Smith, Inc. is providing mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services for the Texas Woman’s University (TWU) Dental Hygiene Clinic and Counseling Center. The project is a 32,801 sq.ft. renovation of an interior finish out space which is located in Mary Gibbs Jones Hall on the TWU Denton campus. Originally, Jones Hall was a residence hall for senior students when it opened in 1961. However, the building now houses Student Health Services, ID Services and other offices.
The mechanical scope includes the replacement of six existing multi-zone air handling units (AHUs) with six single zone AHUs, each consisting of a MERV 13 filter, chilled water cooling coil, plenum supply fans, and economizer capability. The supply system uses single duct variable volume terminal units with electric reheat for zone control. Outside air enters the building through louvers with a ducted inline fan, upstream filter box, and downstream duct mounted electric heating coil for preheat. General exhaust and relief fans have been replaced. The existing heating hot water system, including piping, pump, and heat exchanger, have been demolished. The existing hot water heating coils in air systems outside of the project’s renovation scope have been demolished and replaced with duct mounted electric heating coils.
All existing electrical systems that were not replaced with the first floor Student Health Services upgrade will be replaced with the Dental Clinic upgrade. This includes an increased utility transformer, the addition of an electrical distribution panel, and branch circuit panels at the second and third floors.
All receptacles, lighting and fire alarm devices will be replaced in the scope of work areas. Building steam will be removed. Therefore, all the heat loads will transfer from steam to electric heat.
Additionally, new central dental compressed air and dental vacuum systems will be provided to supply air and vacuum to dental chairs for tool use.
Life safety requirements will be satisfied by upgrading the fire alarm and fire suppression system.
