Gonzalez Shah Smith President Inti Gonzalez joined healthcare and design leaders at Bisnow’s Future of Austin Healthcare and Life Sciences event to discuss the continued growth of healthcare in Central Texas.

Gonzalez participated in the "Expanding Austin Healthcare" panel, which focused on capacity growth, specialty expansion, and the regional strategy shaping the next wave of healthcare development in Austin. The panel brought together leaders from healthcare, philanthropy, architecture, and engineering to discuss how the region is responding to increasing demand for care and continued investment in healthcare facilities.

Inti Gonzalez speaking on the Expanding Austin Healthcare panel at Bisnow

During the discussion, Gonzalez shared practical strategies for delivering high-performing healthcare facilities in today's evolving market. Topics included early procurement of critical MEP equipment, prefabrication, integrated operating room systems, and bringing contractors on board early to support cost and constructability reviews. The conversation focused on proven approaches that can help healthcare projects stay on schedule and on budget.

Gonzalez also highlighted the growing use of autonomous robots to transport supplies throughout hospitals, offering greater flexibility than traditional pneumatic tube systems. As he shared during the discussion, "The Jedi in me is very excited to see this solution pick up traction, and I hope to see more R2-D2s in hospitals near you."

Joining Gonzalez on the panel were Harbir Singh, founder of TXM Microhospital; Mark Ambler, Associate Chief Medical Officer for Primary Care at Austin Regional Clinic; Susan Hewlitt, Executive Director of Dell Children's Foundation; and Whitney Fuessel, Partner and Regional Practice Director for Health at HKS. Brian Jarrett, Vice President of Business Development at Gordon Highlander, moderated the discussion.

As President of Gonzalez Shah Smith, Gonzalez brings 17 years of experience designing mechanical systems for healthcare, higher education, and government facilities. His work focuses on practical, high-performing building systems that support long-term operations, maintainability, and energy efficiency.

GSS is proud to contribute to conversations shaping the future of healthcare infrastructure in Austin and across Texas.

A resilient, high-performance utility plant built to serve the Texas A&M Galveston campus for decades to come.

When Texas A&M University at Galveston set out to enhance campus reliability and energy efficiency, a key focus was the development of a new Central Utility Plant (CUP). Designed by Shah Smith & Associates and commissioned by Gonzalez Shah Smith (GSS), the facility serves as the backbone of the university's heating and cooling systems, ensuring sustainable comfort and reliable performance across the coastal campus.

Built for the Coast. Designed for the Future.

The new plant encompasses 13,000 square feet of interior-conditioned space and an additional 13,000 square feet of exterior equipment area. Built one foot above the island's recorded storm-surge level, the structure was engineered for long-term coastal durability, with materials selected specifically to withstand the region's salt-air environment.

Commissioning for Performance

To ensure every component performed to its design intent, GSS led a rigorous commissioning process that verified functionality, efficiency, and system integration within the broader campus network.

"

For the TAMU Galveston Central Utility Plant, commissioning was integral to project completion. During the commissioning process, our team tested the operation and functionality of the campus cooling and heating systems so that the TAMU Galveston campus could be confident that the buildings could be cooled and heated efficiently.

Bringing the Plant Online

From the early phases of construction to final verification, the GSS commissioning team emphasized performance, collaboration, and sustainability as guiding principles.

Designed for Efficiency

Sustainability was central to the plant's mission, and GSS played a key role in verifying the high-efficiency systems.

High-efficiency modular condensing boilers for heating
Optimized configuration for long-term energy savings and reduced emissions

A More Sustainable Backup Strategy

In alignment with Texas A&M's long-term environmental goals, the team also helped confirm the performance of cleaner and more reliable backup generator fuel sources.

"

We utilized natural gas as a fuel source for the generator instead of a diesel design. Natural gas, in theory, is a more sustainable, long-term resource, unlike diesel which requires on-site storage and additional treatment processes.
